STEP 2 - ADR Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Training - C P 2 3 8 Initial

The carriage of dangerous goods by road has inherent risks and dangers and by attending recognised training, drivers can reduce the hazards to themselves and to other road users by following industry guidelines and health and safety legislation.

Transporting dangerous goods in the following vehicles will require the driver to hold a valid ADR Vocational Training Certificate:

  • A road tanker with a capacity greater than 1,000 litres
  • A tank container with a capacity greater than 3,000 litres
  • A vehicle having a permissible maximum weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes

ADR drivers must obtain a vocational training certificate after receiving appropriate training and passing a written examination.

Completing an ADR course with TTS will enable you to identify the risks associated with transporting dangerous goods and prepare you for the Scottish Qualifications Authority examinations (the Department for Transport’s chosen examining agent). It is the minimum legal requirement for individuals responsible for driving vehicles containing dangerous goods and substances in tanks or packages.

We offer ADR initial on a monthly basis and refresher courses run every two months.

This is a bespoke 3 day course for packages carrying the following:

Module 001 - Any class of dangerous goods in tankers and packages (core module)

Module 003 - Any class of dangerous goods in packages

Module 005 - Class 2 Gases

Module 006 - Class 3 Flammable Liquids

Module 011 - Class 8 Corrosives

Candidates will be able to have up to 14 hours of “non Driver CPC-approved” ADR training uploaded to their Driver CPC record during one 5 year period.

Course Cancellation: No refund will be made for any candidate who fails to attend or does not complete the course. Cancellations or changes must be made within a specified timeframe before the course date, otherwise full fees will be charged and no refund will be made.  The cancellation policy for this course is 5 working days prior to the course start date.

Drivers’ Hours and Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations

Attendance on courses is a legal requirement, therefore please be aware of the requirements of the Drivers’ Hours Regulations. Time spent attending a course is likely to affect the amount of driving or other work you/your driver may undertake under the drivers’ hours regulations.

Theory Module 2 Explainer

If you want to drive professionally you need a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) qualification. Driver CPC training is continual professional development which carries on throughout a professional bus, coach or lorry driver's career. Once you pass your Driver CPC, you'll be issued with a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), sometimes referred to as a CPC card.

In most cases if you are driving during your working hours, either as your main job, or if you drive on behalf of your employer at any time while being paid for your work (even if this is infrequent or not part of your usual duties), you will require Driver CPC. There are some exemptions for Driver CPC – you can find out more here https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/exemptions-and-driver-cpc-fees and here https://www.gov.uk/guidance.

The Driver CPC initial qualification has two modules:

Module 2: Case study test Module 4: Practical demonstration test

You must pass both parts to get your Driver CPC.

The Driver Qualification Card (DQC), can be acquired as part of your driver training and relates to the Driver CPC requirement.

Not everyone requires the Theory Module 2 though. This depends on whether or not you have “acquired rights”.

You will have acquired rights if you fall into one of the below categories:

a) You had your car licence before 1st January 1997 - gives you acquired rights for both bus
and lorry, but the acquired rights won’t be activated until a bus test has been passed) b) You had your vocational (bus) driving test before 10th September 2008 – gives you acquired rights for the bus only
c) You had your vocational (lorry) driving test from before 10th September 2009 – gives you acquired rights for the lorry only

If you have acquired rights, you are exempt from having to pass the module 2 and 4 tests and the module 2 test won’t be automatically available to book on the theory booking site.

If you have no adquired rights, there is no option to do anything other than modules 2 and 4.

If you do have acquired rights, there is an option to complete theory modules 2 and 4, instead of completing 35 hours of CPC training (since it is essentially the equivalent training) but this is rare. In this case the module 2 test will need to be added on manually. If you are considering going down this route, please contact us and we can provide further assistance on how to go about this.

So, if you are working towards your first DQC and you do have acquired rights, you need to complete 35 hours of Periodic Training (view link) and Theory Module 4.

If you are working towards your first DQC and you don’t have acquired rights, you need to complete the Theory Module 2 AND Theory Module 4.

Once you have your DQC you must do 35 hours of training every five years to keep the card up to date. You can find out more about the Driver CPC requirements here: (view link)

We understand that this can be confusing, so our experienced team is on hand to assist you if you still need further clarification. Please contact us on 028 9082 5653 if you need any further help with this.
