STEP 2 - ADR Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road - Refresher Course

If Candidates have previously attended and passed an ADR Initial Course and are in possession of a current ADR Driver Training Card then they can attend a Refresher Course.   An ADR Driver Training Card is valid for five years from the date of issue. This can be extended during the final twelve months of validity for a further period of five years, from the date of expiry, by the holder undertaking and passing the appropriate refresher training and examinations.

To ensure that the examinations can be marked and card issued prior to current expiry date by SQA, the Candidate must have a minimum of six weeks until expiry left on their licence on the last day of the refresher course date.

Candidates for refresher training may only receive training on the modules covered by their existing ADR Driver Training Certificate.

For non-UK ADR Driver Training Certificate holders sitting refresher training, a copy of their current ADR Driver Training Certificate must be submitted to SQA prior to the training course and as early as possible. This is to ensure the correct expiry date and entitlement are transferred to their refreshed ADR Driver Training Certificate. If successful, a refresher candidate will be issued with an ADR Driver Training Card valid for five years from the expiry date of their current certificate.

This course fee only includes the 2.5 days of training.  All required exams need to be booked separately.  Once we verify the exams that you require, you will receive a payment link for those exams.

Exams are additional and are priced at £20 per module.  There is a minimum of 3 exams (core plus either packages or tanker, or both, plus at least one class module) and maximum of 10 exams.

If you have 9 or 10 exams to refresh we may be able to group these into 5 or 6 exams.  Please read more in our FAQ section below to determine eligibility.  When we receive your booking we will be able to ascertain the most cost-effective way of booking the exams.

Candidates will be able to have up to 14 hours of “non Driver CPC-approved” ADR training uploaded to their Driver CPC record during one 5 year period.

Course Cancellation: No refund will be made for any candidate who fails to attend or does not complete the course. Cancellations or changes must be made within a specified timeframe before the course date, otherwise full fees will be charged and no refund will be made.  The cancellation policy for this course is 5 working days prior to the course start date.

Theory Module 2 Explainer

If you want to drive professionally you need a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) qualification. Driver CPC training is continual professional development which carries on throughout a professional bus, coach or lorry driver's career. Once you pass your Driver CPC, you'll be issued with a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), sometimes referred to as a CPC card.

In most cases if you are driving during your working hours, either as your main job, or if you drive on behalf of your employer at any time while being paid for your work (even if this is infrequent or not part of your usual duties), you will require Driver CPC. There are some exemptions for Driver CPC – you can find out more here https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/exemptions-and-driver-cpc-fees and here https://www.gov.uk/guidance.

The Driver CPC initial qualification has two modules:

Module 2: Case study test Module 4: Practical demonstration test

You must pass both parts to get your Driver CPC.

The Driver Qualification Card (DQC), can be acquired as part of your driver training and relates to the Driver CPC requirement.

Not everyone requires the Theory Module 2 though. This depends on whether or not you have “acquired rights”.

You will have acquired rights if you fall into one of the below categories:

a) You had your car licence before 1st January 1997 - gives you acquired rights for both bus
and lorry, but the acquired rights won’t be activated until a bus test has been passed) b) You had your vocational (bus) driving test before 10th September 2008 – gives you acquired rights for the bus only
c) You had your vocational (lorry) driving test from before 10th September 2009 – gives you acquired rights for the lorry only

If you have acquired rights, you are exempt from having to pass the module 2 and 4 tests and the module 2 test won’t be automatically available to book on the theory booking site.

If you have no adquired rights, there is no option to do anything other than modules 2 and 4.

If you do have acquired rights, there is an option to complete theory modules 2 and 4, instead of completing 35 hours of CPC training (since it is essentially the equivalent training) but this is rare. In this case the module 2 test will need to be added on manually. If you are considering going down this route, please contact us and we can provide further assistance on how to go about this.

So, if you are working towards your first DQC and you do have acquired rights, you need to complete 35 hours of Periodic Training (view link) and Theory Module 4.

If you are working towards your first DQC and you don’t have acquired rights, you need to complete the Theory Module 2 AND Theory Module 4.

Once you have your DQC you must do 35 hours of training every five years to keep the card up to date. You can find out more about the Driver CPC requirements here: (view link)
