STEP 2 - TechSafe™ Electric Vehicle/Hybrid Training

TTS is authorised to provide Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) accredited electric vehicle (EV) upskill training.

Transport Training Services is responding to industry demand by offering training on electric/hybrid vehicles for fully qualified technicians, working in the light vehicle sector, that need to learn how to safely maintain and repair electric or hybrid vehicles, or anyone with existing knowledge that wants to be certified to demonstrate competence.

Driven by targets set by government to enable adoption of zero emission cars and vans, there is a very real need to increase technician competence and in turn, consumer confidence that electric and hybrid vehicles can be maintained properly and safely.  Recognising this early on, TTS set out to address the issue within Northern Ireland and now has trainers suitably qualified to deliver IMI TechSafe™ courses.

TTS can offer a range of electric/hybrid courses but for now is focusing primarily on the Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement qualification (ref 603/1468/0), since this is the most relevant and in-demand requirement currently.

This is a two-day course for experienced mechanics/technicians, which enables successful candidates to work safely around EV/hybrid vehicles and includes vehicles that may have damage to their high voltage system.

This training reduces the risk of accidents with these high voltages and the qualification helps employers meet their ‘duty of care’ under the Electricity at Work Regulations, to prevent danger when carrying out work on electrical systems.

As Northern Ireland’s premier motor industry training specialist, TTS has acquired three hybrid vehicles, including a brand new, top of the range Toyota RAV4, plus an additional new plug-in hybrid to ensure that learners are training on the most up-to-date vehicle specifications.

Participants on this course will be issued with internationally recognised certification upon completion and their details will be held on the IMI EV TechSafe™ Professional Register so that motorists can check if technicians at their chosen garage are able to work on their vehicle safely.

The Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) has given its endorsement to the IMI TechSafe™ standards for people working on electrified vehicles.

Course Cancellation: No refund will be made for any candidate who fails to attend or does not complete the course. Cancellations or changes must be made within a specified timeframe before the course date, otherwise full fees will be charged and no refund will be made.  The cancellation policy for this course is 5 working days prior to the course start date.

We do not currently have dates planned for this course. Please complete the below form and we will contact you as soon as we have new dates scheduled.

Theory Module 2 Explainer

If you want to drive professionally you need a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) qualification. Driver CPC training is continual professional development which carries on throughout a professional bus, coach or lorry driver's career. Once you pass your Driver CPC, you'll be issued with a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), sometimes referred to as a CPC card.

In most cases if you are driving during your working hours, either as your main job, or if you drive on behalf of your employer at any time while being paid for your work (even if this is infrequent or not part of your usual duties), you will require Driver CPC. There are some exemptions for Driver CPC – you can find out more here https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/exemptions-and-driver-cpc-fees and here https://www.gov.uk/guidance.

The Driver CPC initial qualification has two modules:

Module 2: Case study test Module 4: Practical demonstration test

You must pass both parts to get your Driver CPC.

The Driver Qualification Card (DQC), can be acquired as part of your driver training and relates to the Driver CPC requirement.

Not everyone requires the Theory Module 2 though. This depends on whether or not you have “acquired rights”.

You will have acquired rights if you fall into one of the below categories:

a) You had your car licence before 1st January 1997 - gives you acquired rights for both bus
and lorry, but the acquired rights won’t be activated until a bus test has been passed) b) You had your vocational (bus) driving test before 10th September 2008 – gives you acquired rights for the bus only
c) You had your vocational (lorry) driving test from before 10th September 2009 – gives you acquired rights for the lorry only

If you have acquired rights, you are exempt from having to pass the module 2 and 4 tests and the module 2 test won’t be automatically available to book on the theory booking site.

If you have no adquired rights, there is no option to do anything other than modules 2 and 4.

If you do have acquired rights, there is an option to complete theory modules 2 and 4, instead of completing 35 hours of CPC training (since it is essentially the equivalent training) but this is rare. In this case the module 2 test will need to be added on manually. If you are considering going down this route, please contact us and we can provide further assistance on how to go about this.

So, if you are working towards your first DQC and you do have acquired rights, you need to complete 35 hours of Periodic Training (view link) and Theory Module 4.

If you are working towards your first DQC and you don’t have acquired rights, you need to complete the Theory Module 2 AND Theory Module 4.

Once you have your DQC you must do 35 hours of training every five years to keep the card up to date. You can find out more about the Driver CPC requirements here: (view link)

We understand that this can be confusing, so our experienced team is on hand to assist you if you still need further clarification. Please contact us on 028 9082 5653 if you need any further help with this.
